A Ukrainian Paralympian left the warfront to compete in Paris. His mind is on his platoon in 'hell'
For Ukrainian volleyball player and infantry officer Dmytro Melnyk, coming to Paris to compete at the Paralympic Games has come at a cost. Such is the heart-wrench for Ukraine's delegation of 141 athletes who are trying to remain focused on the chase for medals even as the Russian onslaught on their country means their minds are often elsewhere. As Melnyk told reporters his story Friday after his volleyball team's opening match, his translator from the Ukrainian delegation broke down into tears.

Floods in Nigeria have killed scores and washed away farmland, raising food security concerns
Weeks of flooding have killed nearly 200 people in Nigeria and washed away homes and farmlands, the country's disaster management agency said, further threatening food supplies, especially in the hard-hit northern region. The floods blamed on poor infrastructure and badly maintained dams have killed 185 people and displaced 208,000 in 28 of Nigeria’s 36 states, the National Emergency Management Agency said in an update Friday, triggering frantic efforts to evacuate hundreds of thousands to makeshift shelters. Nigeria records flooding every year mostly as a result of failure to follow environmental guidelines and inadequate infrastructure.

She said she still doesn’t know how he was killed and worries he was strangled due to the tightness of the rope around his neck. The eight-year-old alpaca was killed on August 31 2021 after testing twice testing positive for Bovine TB after campaigners failed in a four year battle to save him.
