Lower Kurast runs vs. Countess for runes

So I've done a fair number of Countess and LK runs for runes Um and above, and I was wondering which was more efficient time wise. I do both with a CL/Orb sorc, p1 Countess runs take ~80 seconds and Lower Kurast runs at p8 take about 5 minutes, so it's roughly 4 Countess runs per LK run.

With Countess, I'm pretty much guaranteed a rune or two every time, but most of the time it'll be in the El - Amn range. With LK, I probably average a rune or two per run also, but that means I get a lot less runes per time. Right now I think I'm sticking with Countess, but her special drop only goes up to Ist while LK goes up to Jah or Ber, so it's a trade-off of quality vs. quantity. Anyone have a convincing argument for either side?

Hold up i can get runes in LK? I didn ot know that waht monster to kill or is it just a special thing of that area?

I would stick with Lk runs if indeed it is true that you can get Jah/Ber runes their. I mean Jah/Ber would be way more usefull than the runes that the tess drops. besides she likes to drop total crap. the best ive ever gotten offa her was a dol/sol

Most people don't actually kill things for LK runs, they just try to pop as many chests, corpses, and stashes as they can on P8.

Since both runs are so boring, alternate between them, and between other runs (and even other chars) as well.

There are ~ 3 chests or so around the "fire" area in LK located in those surrounding huts that are "superchests" which people pop for sure. On occasion you can get a very nice unique from a random chest/barrel.

For fast runs you can use a Vigor Pally. For safe runs you can use a necro with summons and curses.

You just pop everything. You get a ton of crafting supplies too. I've done very limited runs (bored) and gotten, I think, a Ko rune.

I stuck with Countess and picked up a Mal rune once.

It's true that LK runs can produce a Ber but of course it's extremely rare.

Did a few hundred LK runs (stopped counting at 400) and picked up a Ber, 2 Vex and and some 'lower' runes there. Yes they are extremely boring, but they have much more potential then the regular Shael and Amn the countess will drop you (if she forgets to dish out 3 or 4 El runes). Another reason for me to do LK is that I play HC and those archers on the way down to countess can be too lethal to just teleport past (once met a Holy Shock boss archer that got some Fanatism from another boss and I barely made it with a sorc, sure there are other character options).

Rune running is pretty boring in my opinion and it's not like the chances to find runes are astronomically improved by running LK, they are a lot better with the Countess but she usually drops crap and can't drop the real sweet runes. So if you haven't already found pretty much every unique and you're only looking for runes, then just play the game in areas you think are fun (on a high player setting) and hope you get lucky (runes aren't everything). Although if it "only" takes 400 runs to get a ber and 2 vex I just migh consider running LK myself..

Both can be worthwhile, both can be boring. I've never found higher than an Um from either, though it's certainly possible. The nice thing about Kurast runs is that you can get *tons* of gems. Also, in the sixty or so runs I've done (hardly a scientific sample), I've found three elite uniques from chests, and several exceptional/normal uniques, and a couple of good set items. If you've killed Meph, then all of the Zakarum-type monsters will run away from you, which is very handy. I do my runs in HC, and I've never had much trouble with near death experiences, though it can get a little hairy when you have a few bosses following you around.

Now that I've beaten baal with my javazon, though, I'm moo-ving onto cows, though Lower Kurast runs vs. Countess for runes (1)

Actually I think that is when you kill the council for quest.

I think you're right... I just usually do the two quests back-to-back, so I've never tried Kurast runs after the council but before Meph.

The only ones who don't run are the cleric-types, with their blizzards and lightning bolts. That's sort of a pain... but still, not a big deal.

There are no 'cleric types' in lower kurast and thats the reason it runs so smooth. Full of chests and the only monsters to deal with are apes, leapers and them big birds. Sometimes I kill them all, sometimes I just ignore the monsters. Its boring indeed, but rewarding at times. Dont let the fact not many runes drop from chests fool you, since it does not seem to take a zillion 'el' runes to get something better.

I nominate Malachi for the most patient rune hunter ever. 400 runs at about 5 minutes per. That's over 33 hours in Lower Kurast.

Countess drops nice uniques sometimes, but other than that LK all the way.

Correct... I tend to do all three Kurast levels one after the other, though, so in the bazaar and U.K., they can be pesky.

For me its all about the time. I prefer Countess to LK since I can teleport straight through and get in & out so fast. I use the same criteria for the players setting when I MF. I feel its better to get in the maximum number of runs, even if it means a slightly lower drop chance. Plus, I get too bored doing the same runs over and over if it takes awhile for each one. If you can do it in about 1 minute, it doesn't get so boring.

They run away from me the first time I see them if my level's "too high". (I do only full clears, re-run to get to the next point and clear every single false tomb, sometimes multiple times) usually after about lvl 30. I too love LK, I wasn't aware of the rune thing but I do it for the rares--great place early on to get some marvelous gear.

If I read Urlik's guide correctly Act 5 superchests should be the Shiznit when high runes are desired.

If you could somehow get a Glacial Trail roll where Bonesaw Breaker's chamber is close to the waypoint it might be worth looking into.
